Possible N of 1 Issue with Notifications

I have a persistent notification on messages that never goes away. I also have a message from a guy who hasn't messaged me and I never messaged him (the verified profile). The message area was blank and I messaged him to see if the notification would go away, but it did not yet.

This notification went away as soon as the verified profile replied to my message and I read it. So I think the source of the issue was he showed up without any message. Unless someone modified something on the backend fort me. This is now resolved for me.
